8 Tips for Self Care

I’m sure you’ve seen the term “self care” floating around on your social media accounts, and for good reason! We have to agree that a little self care is totally necessary for maintaining sanity. As business owners, wives, moms, professionals, Sunday school teachers, friends, aunts - this list could go on for awhile, but you get the idea - women are so focused on giving to others. We make sure our kids are fed and bathed, laundry is done and dishes are washed, emails and phone calls are returned from work, rinse and repeat. This is why it is so important to take just a small fraction of time for yourself. Rachel Hollis talked about this in her movie, “Made for More.” She says to imagine you’re a vase, and water is being poured into you. If you try to lean over to give some of the water to the things and people around you, you tip over. If you stand tall as the water pours into you, the water will fill up until it overflows to the things and people around you. Let’s be the vases that stand tall. When you take care of yourself, it’s that much easier to pour love into the things and people you care about most.

A glass of wine, a sip of hot tea, a good book and a bubble bath are all great ways to promote self-care.

Self care doesn’t have to be laying in a bathtub with a Turbie Twist on your head and cucumber slices on your eyes. Sometimes balancing produce on our eyelids isn’t exactly the thing that makes us feel recharged and ready to take on the world. Self care is one of those things that can look different for all of us, but we put our heads together to comprise a list of some of our favorite ways to thank ourselves for working so hard.

Cheers to you

Have a glass of wine while wearing a face mask (we are obsessed with this one from Silver Market Co.) or some collagen under eye pads. Enjoy some silence, music, or catch up on your favorite show. We highly recommend Game of Thrones, Schitt’s Creek, and The Office.

Bath Time

Let’s not count out some cucumber action! A hot bath with some Northeast Glass Candles (we loved when they collab with our faves at Homebrewed and Co. to create some unique scents and products) and an Barr Co. bath bomb is a great way to unwind.

Pamper Yourself

A self care blog post isn’t a self care blog post without mentioning some spa treatments. You can never go wrong with a mani/pedi or a deep tissue massage! If you want to take a step up from a face mask and really treat your skin, and local to the Charleston, WV area, the Bliss Facial at Spa Bliss is wonderful! Another fun, local to WV, way to pamper yourself is to get a blowout from Salon 405 (or at Drybar if you aren’t local). Those girls will make you leave feeling like Beyoncé.

Listening to an audio book while you walk on the treadmill, drive to work, etc. can be a great way of tuning out and taking care of yourself!

Nothing Like a Good Book

Read or listen to an uplifting book or podcast. We recommend Rachel Hollis, of course! But you can see a whole list of books we also love on our Amazon page!

Get Moving

Create a playlist with some of your favorite tunes on Spotify and listen while taking walk. If that’s not your workout vibe, try finding a class. Sometimes it’s nice to be instructed and not have to think about the workout. We love a heated flow yoga class for this. If all else fails, simply tell Alexa to play some of your favorite tunes and bust some sick dance moves in your kitchen!

Date Yourself

Take yourself out for a fancy coffee date or have lunch on the outside patio of Panera Bread. Go shopping and waste as much time as you please smelling candles at TJMaxx or wandering aimlessly around Target!

Finding the joy in the little things - like your significant other making your lunch or dinner - is a great way to boost your mood!

Gratitude Journal

Write down 10 things for which you are grateful. It doesn't have to be anything big. We asked some of our Instagram friends what they are simply thankful for, and they said "My husband cooked dinner,” and “My morning Diet Coke!” Keep it simple, and you will be amazed at the amount of wonderful things and people who surround you.

Shhhh

Silence. Turn off your phone and TV for 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour - whatever you can do. We understand completely if this is something that you have to work up to, the social media addiction is real! Once you do it though, you will find yourself thinking “ahh, so this is silence!”

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the chaos of life and all of our responsibilities, but we have to check in with ourselves regularly to make sure our vases aren’t empty. We hope you take some time to relax and treat yourself this weekend!
